5/30/2023 0 Comments Scandal in spring by lisa kleypas![]() ![]() Daisy (and Lillian) are aghast at this idea, and Daisy's determined that this not happen. Daisy's father has given up hope that she'll find a peer to marry, and he wants to marry her off in the worst way, so he tells her that he's picked out Matthew Swift for her. I'm assuming that Matthew and Daisy hadn't seen each other for three years (she being in England and Matthew in New York), and Daisy (and her sister Lillian) remembering Matthew as being this unattractive, gangly string-bean, know-it-all "suck-up" who works for her father. ![]() I loved how Daisy and Matthew met (or should I say "re-met", since they'd known each other for quite a while). Thinking back on the other Wallflowers stories, maybe Scandal In Spring doesn't quite have all the drama, or even the passion (although Daisy and Matthew were passionate enough for me) of the other books, and maybe Daisy and Matthew's relationship wasn't as volatile as the others, but there was plenty to love in this sweet (and sexy) story. I loved this story! Maybe it was because I approached it with lower expectations, since everyone has said it's not as good as the first three Wallflower books, or maybe it was because LK is such a fabulous storyteller, and made me fall in love with the characters.but who cares-I thoroughly enjoyed it! ![]()

5/30/2023 0 Comments Weaveworld book review![]() When I graduated from my MFA in Writing Popular Fiction program at Seton Hill University, an old friend sent me a signed copy to celebrate my achievement. It still speaks to me today for those same reasons. A hidden world of magical people who have to hide to keep themselves safe because of their differences spoke volumes to me as a teenager of mixed ethnicity growing up in rural Pennsylvania. ![]() Clive Barker is best known for his horror fiction, and while there are horrific scenes in Weaveworld, this novel is more in tune with portal fantasy. I used to listen to that book over and over, and it deepened my understanding of how scary stories should be told. ![]() I think I still have the cassettes somewhere. At the time, a friend of mine volunteered at our local library and wanted to impress me, so he snagged an audio copy of The Damnation Game. ![]() I think it was the third Clive Barker book I read, with The Damnation Game being the first. I first read Weaveworld in high school in 1988. ![]() ![]() On whether Akron has succeeded in finding a new identity And we belong here in a way that we're starting to kind of be proud of. And it was, you know: Do we leave and go where it's going to be a more obvious sense of opportunity, or do we stay and commit to a place that kind of needs us more? And it kind of came down to: We belong here. ![]() I had a job offer in New York that I gave a lot of thought to, and talked to my wife a lot about it. Yeah, actually, there was a specific moment. And when it does, you know, we sort of bristle, because when you have been trying to redefine your identity and then, in Ohio every four years, here come the parachutes with everybody, "Ohio's going to pick the next president.". And one of the things I've come to understand is that the rest of the country doesn't pay that much attention to the post-industrial Midwest. I wouldn't say that it was so much an overt message with a purpose, as it was just kind of like, organically: This is what I've come to understand, having spent my whole life here. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments Stardust novel![]() The story begins in late April 1839, as John William Draper had just photographed the Moon and Charles Dickens was serialising Oliver Twist. Gaiman has also occasionally made references to writing a sequel, or at least another book concerning the village of Wall. In 2007, a film based on the novel was released to generally positive reviews. It is concerned with the adventures of a young man from the village of Wall, which borders the magical land of Faerie. Stardust has a different tone and style from most of Gaiman's prose fiction, being consciously written in the tradition of pre- Tolkien English fantasy, following in the footsteps of authors such as Lord Dunsany and Hope Mirrlees. ![]() Stardust is a 1999 fantasy novel by British writer Neil Gaiman, usually published with illustrations by Charles Vess. Casting spells intended to achieve such feats as make a vacuum cleaner break, Listen works her way through almost half the book before she notices the tiny promise on the back cover: "This Book Will Mend Your Broken Heart."
